Kirsten signaled from Song to move into a steady gallop. The stallion has had the worst luck ever. He was born late in the year and only started full time training as a two year old. Then a few days before his maiden race as a three year old he stumbled and pulled a tendon in his leg. Eventually nursing him back to health proved a success. Now, four years old and without any races under his belt he looks strong and ready to run. Hopefully it's not too late for the good looking stallion to make his move. He had too much good potential to just go into the breeding shed without one start.
Kirsten could remember him as a foal. He was the best looking foal of his bunch, even though there were only four of them. It was her first year into the business and things were looking pretty good with her stallion, Night Stalker, two year old filly, Charisma and grade I stakes racer, Gold Digger. She had some good weanlings and some good looking broodmares. There was Sea Storm, Special Spot, Majestic Wind, and of course Song's dam, Sweet Melody. Sea Storm had to be put down a few years ago, Majestic Wind was sold, Special Spot died shortly after her foal's birth and Sweet Melody pwowed away two years ago giving birth to Song's half sister, Secret Miracle.
She could still remember Song as a feisty young colt pushing the other foals around and beating them all in speed. He looked so good that day and looks even better now. He is mature, strong and ready to run. His leg is strong and healed and was running strong.
They were on the homestretch now. Kirsten was prepared to let him run with everything he had. "Sing for me Song!" He let out an amazing burst of speed so unexpected that Kirsten became unbalanced in her saddle. She quickly rebalanced herself. She forgotten about his strong closing kick. A smile crept upon her face, finally he will get the chance to run. "You'll do great my boy!"
They were almost at their end mark and Song let out an even bigger burst of speed. If she wasn't so concentrated she would have shaken her head in amazement. He was ready to run and he will not let anything hold him back. She did not need a stopwatch to know how fast they ran in that last quarter. He was definitely a Seattle Slew son.
After pulling up the colt Kirsten dismounted and quickly checked his leg for any heat. It was sound as sound can be. She grinned to herself. He was going to be some surprise into the racing world this year. It's never too late...
